· Divided into three categories:
A. Indus River System:
- Originates in Tibet- Mansarovar- Sanokhwab Glacier
Tributaries:
1. Sutlej – originates in Tibet-Mansarovar- Rakshtaal lake
2. Beas – Beas Kund- Rohtang Pass-H.P
3. Ravi – Bara Bhangal glacier- kangra- H.P
4. Chenab- Baralacha La – Lahaul Spiti
5. Jhelum – Kashmir- Verinag- Sheshnag Lake
B. Ganga River System:
· Originates: Uttrakhand- Utrakashi – Gomukh – Gangotri Glacier.
· Here is called Bhagirathi
· Devprayag- Bhagirathi + Alaknanda = Ganga
· Rudraprayag- Mandakini + Alaknanda
· Ganga is the longest river of India
· Yamuna is the longest tributary of Ganga
· In Bangladesh Ganga is called Padma
Tributaries:
1. Yamuna- originates in Yamunotri- joins Ganga
2. Chambal- Or. M.P- Mehu- Janapaav hills- joins Yamuna
3. Betwa- Or. Vindyachal Parvat- Joins Yamuna
4. Son- Amarkantak – joins Ganga
5. Kosi – Sikkim+ Nepal+Tibet border (Himalayan Range) – joins Ganga
6. Gandak- Nepal+Tibet border – joins Ganga
7. Ghagra – Tibet- Mansarovar – Gurl Mandota – joins Ganga
8. Ramganga- Gharwaal hills- joins Ganga
C. Brahmputra :
· Originates from Tibet- Mansarovar- Chomangyungdong Glacier
· 2900 km
· Largest river of India (in terms of volume of water)
· 4th largest in the world
· In Tibet – Brahmputra is called Tsangpo
· In Arunachal Pradesh – Dihaang
· Assam- Brahmputra
· Bangladesh – Jamuna
· In Bangladesh = Ganga( Padma) + Brahmputra(Jamuna) = Padma
· They flow into Bay of Bengal together
· Ganga + Brahmputra makes world’s largest delta – Sunder ban delta
